Why We do it:
Lots of people think we are crazy to care about houses and furniture designed 50-60 years ago which is why part of our mission here at Valley Modern Design is to educate the public about this awesome era and its importance to the Valley of the Sun. Those of you who don’t care about modern architecture might consider looking for another design firm, but for those of you who think it may be kind of interesting (or have nothing better to do), welcome home…
(OK folks, here is where our Design Diva rants. A lot. We tried to explain to her how boring this stuff is, but she is stubborn and couldn’t be stopped. Please accept our apologies in advance. Hit it Rachel….)
The preservation of historic buildings is important in maintaining a link to Phoenix’s heritage. The postwar era ranch home represents a vital piece in the Valley’s evolution from a sleepy western town to the metropolis that it is today. During this fascinating time in American culture there were significant changes in the way that people purchased, designed, furnished, and lived in their homes, and now the Phoenix area’s examples of post-war architecture are reaching preservation age. (Told you this stuff is brutal, and she is just getting warmed up.)
The preservation of the recent past is controversial and one of the more challenging issues historic preservationists face. The buildings and monuments of the Twentieth Century are disappearing at such a rapid pace that new preservation strategies and arguments are needed to preserve them. Due to the swift increase in development, these structures have little opportunity to survive fifty years, the typical threshold for designation. In addition, the majority of the public has not embraced the “historic value” of these properties. Some believe that the design style of this era has fallen out of favor, and view the buildings as outdated.
This less than sentimental attitude means that preservationists lack a lot of needed support. Evidence suggests that the “mid-century modern” style may be growing in appeal, however, and that more people are beginning to appreciate the architecture of this period. The emergence of magazines like Atomic Ranch, web sites such as www.modernphoenix.net, and organizations such as The Recent Past Preservation Network, indicate that saving these properties is not trivial or trendy; it is true preservation practice, and here to stay. What is clear is that homeowner’s need clear design guidelines on how to proceed (enter: Valley Modern Design!). (If you have read this far, you are a total nerd and there may be no saving you.)
Valley Modern Design offers just that advice. Our team is knowledgeable not just in the areas of design and construction, but design and construction specific to modern architecture and post-war buildings. We have created design guidelines and an extensive database of materials, furnishings, and fixtures to support these projects and enhance modern spaces, and we are super fun to spend time with.
