redefining kitsch

Redefining ‘Kitsch’

critics of mid-century design are always using this word to define it, so i decided to Google ‘kitsch’ and find out what the general understanding of the word is.

I came across definitions such as…

work that is shallow, pretentious, gaudy, without substance”

“Art using popular culture icons, mass-produced objects; means “worthless” in German”

“excessively garish or sentimental art; usually considered in bad taste”

Webster’s definition is: something of tawdry design, appearance, or content created to appeal to popular or undiscriminating taste.

This doesnt sound like modern to me…

kitsch really gets a bad rap, and if it is used to describe modern stuff than it really must be redefined…

I offer this definition to Webster at no charge…

KITSCH… super sexy modern design things that are extremely innovative, ultra creative, and highly sought after. Modern kitsch makes all other design things super jealous and should never be comingled so as to avoid severe injury or harm to these unkitschlike creatures.

so there it is, your new definition of kitsch, now people can use it in any modern conversation!

Watch out… the Valley Modern Design team is bringing kitsch back!
